Structures and Passages

MICHAEL DUNEV

Dedicated to photography since 1970, Michael Dunev (Madrid, 1952) spent most of the 1970s in South America, mainly in Peru and Brazil. In Rio de Janeiro, he worked as a photojournalist, publishing his work in various Brazilian magazines.

The eighties found him in the US, living between Vermont and California, where he combined his photographic work with theatrical lighting design and independent film projects. A graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute, Dunev opened a contemporary art gallery in the same city in 1982, representing established and mid-career artists, and in 1991 founded Aurobora Press, a fine art laboratory dedicated to the publication of artists’ books and monotypes. Returning to Spain in 1999, he established an art centre in Catalonia, hosting regular exhibitions of Spanish and international contemporary art until 2017, when he

Project: Structures and Passages

My approach to photography has always been that of the flâneur, the wanderer open to the unexpected. These photographs are a record of some things I have seen since I first began to use the camera as a framing tool in 1970. Some of the images are accidental, fortuitous shots taken in my travels, places I have seen that have left a deep and lasting impression. Others are a documentary record of friends or people of whom I retain meaningful memories. They cover leitmotifs that have been of central interest to me during the last five decades, such as solitude in the urban landscape, the relationship between people and the impact of mankind on the natural world. The enduring human imprint on the landscape and the complex relationship between civilisation, architecture and territory offer a visual interpretation of how settlements, constructions, and their remains slowly integrate into the topography, becoming an inseparable part of the natural environment. Architectural forms emerge as volumes shaped by time and act as transformative agents that continually redefine their presence in the landscape.

A note from a curator: “The photographs of Michael Dunev exhibit a sophisticated understanding of modernist attention to structure, perspective and the dynamic framing of imagery. The fragments of experience his lens captures are, more often than not, spare and restrained, with the moisture of extraneous detail wrung out. They elicit a De Chirico mood of retrospection in their elegant angled vacancies… doors left open for our eyes and minds to enter and inhabit.”

Robert Flynn Johnson, Curator Emeritus of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco
