01. BERND & HILLA BECHER
The Architecture of Repetition
A water tower is rarely designed to be looked at. Neither is a blast furnace, a cooling tower or a gas tank. Bernd and Hilla Becher spent decades photographing precisely these structures.
Their method was almost severe: frontal views, neutral light, black and white, no theatrical perspective and very little distraction. Industrial buildings were removed from their everyday context and placed against pale skies, one after another.
Seen individually, they are documents. Seen together, they become something else - a study of form.
The grids reveal how structures built for the same purpose develop different proportions, rhythms and geometries. Function creates a family, but never an exact copy.
The Bechers did not need to make industrial architecture monumental. They simply gave it enough silence to be seen.
